OEM vs ODM Solar Inverter: Which Sourcing Model Fits Your Business?

OEM and ODM explained for solar inverter buyers — what each means, when to choose which, and how private label, firmware and packaging customization work.

Sourcing GuideOEM / ODMB2B

If you are a distributor, installer chain or brand owner sourcing inverters, you will hear two terms: OEM and ODM. They describe different levels of customization, and choosing the right model affects cost, speed and control over your product.

The two models

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) — you take an existing, proven design and sell it under your brand. Customization is mostly cosmetic: your logo, packaging, labels and manual. The hardware and firmware are the manufacturer’s standard product.

ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) — the manufacturer develops or modifies the design to your specification: custom output configurations, firmware parameters, communication protocols, even enclosure styling. You get a product that is genuinely yours, at the cost of longer development.

What is customizable in practice

  • Private label — logo, brand colors, carton, manual, display language
  • Firmware — default parameters, communication protocols (CAN/RS485), grid-related settings for your region
  • Specifications — output voltage (110/220 V), DC input ranges, socket types, and in some cases power ratings within the platform’s limits
  • Quality & compliance — certification sets for your destination market

Choosing the right partner

Whatever model you choose, the manufacturer’s factory matters more than the label:

  • Is the factory real and inspectable? Can you do a video audit?
  • Is testing documented — functional test, aging test, traceability?
  • Is support available after the order — spares, firmware updates, RMA?

We support both OEM and ODM programs from our own factory — see our OEM / ODM page for capacity, services and process, or contact our sales team with your target market and volume.

Sourcing — FAQ

What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ)?

MOQ depends on the model and customization depth. OEM branding usually has a lower MOQ than full ODM development. Share your plan and we will confirm a realistic MOQ with pricing.

Can I start with OEM and move to ODM later?

Yes. Many customers launch with OEM branding on standard models, then move to firmware and specification customization once volumes justify development.

Who owns the design in an ODM project?

Typically the manufacturer owns the core platform; your custom configuration and branding belong to you. Contract terms define this explicitly for each project.
